Abstract

Throughout the 20th century, specifically in 1929 when the National University (now UNAM) declared its autonomy, student protests increased during various periods that marked a before and after in the history of the Mexican educational system, each with its own goals and forms of expression. This essay aims to address and analyze the significance of student mobilization in Mexico at the national level over the past two centuries, by exploring and comparing the causes that have driven institutions of higher education to collective university action, as well as the close connections among them and how some issues persist to this day. The following sections examine how these movements have been transformed and adapted by new generations, the forms of protest that are emerging today, and how they relate in retrospect to previous mobilizations.
